My job is weirder than yours.
Oh sure, Danger works with honest-to-God crazy people, and SSFB studies a ladybits disorder, and That Chick works in some kind of top-secret nuclear missile silo, guarded by large men with machine guns. But, I ask you, do any of these ladies have their very own desk parasite? Do they? I didn't think so.
Besides playing host (HA!) to Bernadette for the past three weeks or so, I also spent this afternoon fetching these gals and this thing and bringing them back to the office with me.
The lovely lady at the lower end of the tray is an Ascaris roundworm, and her species is arguably the most successful parasite on the planet. The gal / gent at the top is an earthworm.
The thing, it's what happens when a dog doesn't get treated for heartworms.
We're doing research for a parasites program, which makes this still weird but not utterly creepy.
In the course of my research, I read this fantastic book. It was gross but also super cool, and surprisingly funny. This is my favorite photo from the book:
(Sorry about the quality. My scanner is rebellious.) The text to accompany the photo says, This is Buddy, a Pomeranian dog who has clearly just been to the canine hairdresser. As you can see from the relative positions of the dog (who is clearly having a very good hair day) and the human (who is clearly not), dogs of this size and shape make very good lapdogs. Good times, good times.
Edited to add: I want this shirt. REALLY REALLY BAD.
Reading: Something Rising (Light and Swift) by Haven Kimmel
Playing: Howl by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Ahhh... The picture of the two worms brought back fond memories of dissecting earth worms, etc., in high school biology class.
ReplyDeleteI'd want that T-shirt too, if it wasn't red. I just don't look good in red... well, red shoes are okay.
Is that a nun wielding nun-chucks??
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
You're right! That makes doing portraits of dead people for a living seem normal! :)
ReplyDeleteBibliophile- FOND memories of dissecting worms? k.
EWWWWWWW
ReplyDeleteHi Billbo again (pictures on desk)
I noticed those gorgeous bilbo pics before the nasty ass tapeworm. EWWWWWWWWWW. I *heart* the catfolk though! gorgeous beast!
ReplyDeleteUm...otherwise...desk parasite. go you?
Catfolk! ROFL!
ReplyDeleteDude, you're the best. BEST. :D
Indeed. I have been beat. I do not have a tapeworm or other parasite on my desk... not that I'm aware of at anyrate.
ReplyDeleteI do however have two whole freezers full of ladybits. What do you have to say about that?!
Is Kitters feeling better now that he's getting his vapors? Inquiring minds want to know...
Hmmm...even one freezer of ladybits is a pretty good contender for a few worms. Maybe we should call it a tie.
ReplyDeleteAs for Kitters, he seems to be feeling better. He still has to have time-outs, but not nearly as often. Also, the other night, he spotted a cat out in the yard, ran within a foot of MB's brother (his archrival), hissed like a spilled kettle, but did not bite. We count this as a major victory. Thank you for asking!
I don't know how to love you more.
ReplyDeleteI just don't.
My desk may not have parasites, but some of my patients do.
ReplyDeleteeven i want a nun with chucks shirt.
ReplyDeleteRe: nun with chucks shirt, would those be hi-tops? I recommend the basic black with blue flame style; the toe is white so they'd look really nice with-- wait.
ReplyDeleteNo...
And I was pleased to see the nunchucks shirt available in "unisex" style (whatever that means).
